NKE Instrumentation offers a range of unique sensors for environmental protection. There are products capable of measuring high resolution density and absolute salinity as well as pCO2 concentration in seawater. There a wide range of instrumentation integrable on mooring lines or carried on platforms such as ROVs, AUVs or ASVs. The company is also a global leader for profiling floats and drifting buoys.

NOSS: absolute salinity

Description - The thermodynamic properties of seawater, such as density and enthalpy, are now correctly expressed as functions of Absolute Salinity rather than being functions of the conductivity of seawater. Spatial variations of the composition of seawater mean that Absolute Salinity is not simply proportional to Practical Salinity.

NOSS sensor, for NKE Optical Salinity Sensor, is a unique underwater sensor for in situ refractive index measurement and capable to detect salinity anomalies of seawater. NOSS sensor has been designed for an use even in harsh environments, down to 2000 meters. It becomes a pioneer for initiating experimental studies on the refractive index/density of seawater with anomalous composition. It has been designed to be integrated on surface buoys, sea bottom observatories and profiling Provor floats (down to 2000m) and it takes advantage of its little size and low power energy.

pCO²

Description - The pCO2 sensor provides very precise autonomous measurements based on a spectrophotometry approach regarding the pCO2 concentration.

The sensor is designed to measure the concentration of pCO2 at the surface of the ocean. Therefore the CO2 exchange between atmosphere and ocean can be qualified.

This is a kind of re-marinization of the concept in order to be fully compliant regarding the integration on instrumented buoys.

The sensor can also be full autonomous and work by itself through a Modbus mode as the sensor includes a seawater pump and a spectrometer and achieves one year of operating autonomy with one measurement every hour served by a power supply.

The pCO2 sensor can be integrated on CARIOCA and PIRATA buoys with the aim to measure CO2 partial at the sea surface of ocean and also determine the AIR-SEA CO2 fluxes in open ocean.

SC40: SVP drifter

Description - The SC40 drifters are used mostly in offshore in order to monitor the current at sea surface for oceanographic studies and also the oil spill trajectories. The drifters can be fitted with holey socks drogue and are linked to a particular mass of water. The drag ratio between surface buoy and the drogue validates the good function of current follower. If no drogue is mounted, the drifter is affected by the surface current.

The SC40 buoy is a sphere of 400 mm diameter, molded in plastic at high pressure. The SC40 is equipped with low radar echo in order to reduce the risk to be picked up by fishermen and it is fitted with lashing rings.

SC40 – SVP BRST: Sea surface temperature and depth measurement

Description - The SC40 – SVP BRST buoy is a drifting buoy fitted with a Sea Surface Temperature sensor (SST), a Barometric Pressure sensor, a Drogue presence sensor, a High Resolution Sea Surface Temperature sensor (HRSST), a GPS positioning and an IRIDIUM satellite communication to transmit its data. The sensor can be easily removed from the buoy to be calibrated by any certified metrology laboratory.

This product was developed within requirements of the Data Buoy Cooperation Panel (DBCP), the data buoy component of the Joint World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC of UNESCO) Technical Commission for Oceanography and Marine Meteorology (JCOMM).

WiSens automated receiving unit

Description - The WiSens automated receiving unit allows a wireless automated monitoring of the physico-chemical parameters of the water via fishing vessel based on WiSens logger technology from NKE Instrumentation. It is possible to use any WiSens from the WiSens data loggers family and the WiSens are provided in their dedicated protection that ensure general functioning of the WiSens as well a sufficient waterflow at sensor part to maintain qualitative measurement.

Description - The WiSens TD data logger measures and records pressure and temperature over a depth range from 0 to 6000 meters. Four versions are available: 50m, 500m, 1000m and 6000m.

Description - The WiSens Wave data logger measures and records temperature and pressure for assessing waves or tides over a depth range from 0 to 50 meters. The maximum depth immersion for measurement is 40 meters.

SAMBAT: Multiparameter probe

Description - SAMBAT is an autonomous multiparameter probe used to monitor and control water quality, fresh water and sea environment.

This multiparameter probe is used to measure and record the main physical water parameters among them temperature, depth, conductivity, salinity, turbidity, fluorescence, dissovled oxygen and pH.

The probe is equipped with brush and teletransmission as it uses the brush to protect sensors from biogfouling. The measured data can be transferred by e-mail thanks to the integrated GSM modem.

SMALL Coastal Float

Description - The small coastal float allows to easily deploy a multiparameter probe SAMBAT at sea or on the water surface. It provides protection against shocks and reduces the development of biofouling on the multiparameter probe.

When the probe is mounted on the float, the various sensors of the multiparameter probe are located one meter below the water surface.

The operation of removing putting back the mechanical set “SAMBAT support pole” does not require any tool which allows fast, practical and easy maintenance.

SIMEO Buoy: marine ecosystem monitoring station

Description - The aim of the SIMEO buoy is to bring together in one equipment the sensors that will collect information on the life of marine vertebrates, whether flying or swimming.

It can be installed in an offshore wind turbine area or in a Marine Protected Area. This autonomous buoy is able to count fish, cetaceans, but also birds and can record their trajectory and their behavior.

BLIDAR Buoy: weather-oceanographic buoy

Description - This meteo-oceanic measurement buoy comes from a collaborative research & development project. The buoy allows to measure the wind with the greatest possible precision and in all the meteo-oceanic conditions that can be met on an offshore wind site. The buoy is designed and manufactured in France.

BLIDAR is a collaborative project which aims to develop a weather-oceanographic buoy to accurately quantify the energy resource, especially and above all the wind potential measured with a LIDAR, available on offshore wind site. This project is conducted in partnership with the organizations EOLFI, IFREMER, IRSEEM and NKE Instrumentation.

Profiling Buoy: meteorological parameters monitoring

Description - The profiling buoy measures the meteorological parameters of the air at a height of 2 m and records the physico-chemical parameters of the water column. The buoy is wet on a 60m isobath by two anchors or two dead bodies. A profiling float moves in the water column from the sea surface on a 60m depth on a cable which also functions as an inductive line of communication between the PLC and the profiling float. The profiling buoy is autonomous and supplies all sensors from batteries recharged by solar panels. All the data is synthesized by the buoy that transmits them to the ground. The buoy integrates the GPRS antenna in one location, as high as possible and ensuring optimal radio wave transmission.

Freshwater monitoring station

Description - The freshwater instrumented station that was set up in the Verdon, in France, is a seaside or continental waters station. It can be set up in shore, pontoon or waterfront and it is designed for the measurement of water and air parameters. The aim of this structure is to add a multiparameter probe, a weather station and a current sensor (ADCP sensor) and the data are then transmitted via 3G/4G, UHF or iridium transmission.

NKE Instrumentation is responsible for the whole setting up from the metallic structure to the multiparameter probe which is place within a metallic pole.

S2T6000 DH-TI: High temperature

Description - S2T6000 DH TI allows to measure and record temperature. It is designed to be used in harsh environments down to 6000 meters and up to 450°C. The S2T6000 DH TI logger is made of titanium. Moreover, the logger is very easy to use as it is a remote sensor that is light and compact. There is a fast wireless configuration and data collection thanks to a communication interface connected to the USB port of a PC. An underwater communication is possible thanks to a wireless transmission connected to a submarine, a ROV or an AUV.

Piezometer: Deep sea sediment pore pressure monitoring

Description - Piezometer V2 is designed for in situ measurement and monitoring of pore pressure for geotechnical and hydro-sedimentological applications down to 6000 meters.

The pressure of the fluids between the solid grains of the sediment is one of the crucial controls for the stability of sediments.

The piezometer instrumented stake is inserted into the sediment and provides the possibility to measure the pore pressure in different depth levels.

The evolution of this dynamic parameter can be monitored in a short period of hours or some days as well as for several months.

MEDIUM Coastal Buoy

Description - The medium coastal buoy is a 600 liters float that is mounted on central galvanized steel body. The aim of this buoy is to integrate a multiparameter probe SAMBAT and its GPS/GPRS antenna mounted on an aluminum support pole.

The SAMBAT support pole is an aluminum tube that allows to immerse the sensors of the probe in a 2 meters depth and to position the GPS/GPRS antenna in an unobstructed area for GPS reception and GPRS transmission.

Instrumented buoy – measurement chain & current sensor

Description - The instrumented buoy was set up in 2005 and the aim of this buoy is to measure the river temperature, in real time, from surface to ten meter depth, when the nuclear power plan is rejecting cooling water.

The instrumented buoy is equipped with a measurement temperature chain, atmospheric pressure sensor, depth sensor and ADCP-current sensor and the data are transmitted via GPRS and UHF to the final user. The whole system is developed and manufactured by NKE Instrumentation.

Instrumented buoy – water parameters & current flow measurements

Description - The instrumented buoy is designed to measure the water parameters, the flow current, the wave and the weather conditions. A multiparameter probe SAMBAT can be integrated in. The whole system is managed by the ABIN automaton. The data and alarms are sent via a GPRS modem as a file attached to an email.

The instrumented buoy is an autonomous system equipped with solar panels and battery.

PCO2 CARIOCA Buoy

Description - CARIOCA is an automatic drifting buoy designed to measure the concentration of pCO2 at the surface of the ocean in order to qualify the CO2 exchange between atmosphere and ocean.

Moreover, to enable correlation the buoy is fitted with sea surface temperature (SST), practical salinity, fluorescence and dissolved oxygen measurements.

It also includes ARGOS transmission equipment and power supply to achieve one year of operating autonomy with measurements every hour.

The body of the CARIOCA buoy consists of a tube (0.20m in diameter and 2.5m in length). A wider yellow floating body surrounds the upper part of the tube. The total weight of the buoy is about 130 kg.
